Ozioma Agu
Ozioma is a Partner at Stren & Blan Partners, leading the Energy, Finance, and Infrastructure Practice Group. She has garnered many years of experience advising on various aspects of banking and project financing of cumulatively over USD$5 billion, involving development finance institutions, Nigerian and foreign financial institutions, export credit agencies, government funds, and the private sector.
She is the current chairwoman of the law working group of Afrika-Verein and also a member of the advisory board of the organisation.
Ozioma’s exceptional advisory services cover secured and unsecured cross-border lending, project finance, syndicated lending, structured finance, and general corporate and commercial guidance, some of which have received global recognitions. She advised the US-Development Finance Corporation (DFC) on the $250 million subordinated financing to Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), a unique deal that facilitated closing Africa’s infrastructure deficit. Ozioma has advised lenders and borrowers in different capacities, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC), FMO, Proparco, Guaranty Trust Bank, Access Bank Plc, Sterling Bank Plc, and more.
Her expertise in the energy sector is remarkable, particularly in Oil & Gas and Power. She has advised on significant deals, including the acquisition/divestments of major IOCs in Nigeria, the financing and project development of several oil & gas assets, design, build, engineering and construction of refineries within Africa-including the Cabinda refinery in Angola; and facilitating funding for key oil and gas companies. Recently, Ozioma led the Stren & Blan’s Team of advisors in formulating and drafting the legal framework for the establishment of a state and private sector-led electricity market in eastern Nigeria. She has been a driving force behind advancing renewable energy initiatives and has played a vital role in facilitating the growth of solar mini-grid projects, all aimed at ensuring electricity access for off-grid communities in Nigeria.
Ozioma excels in infrastructure advisory and public-private partnerships (PPP). She advised MTN Nigeria, a leading telecommunications provider in a headline PPP intervention road project with the Federal Government of Nigeria, which saw to the implementation of the Road Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme (RITC). She was the lead legal advisor advising the concessionaire in the landmark concessioning of a seaport in Libreville, Gabon. She led the Stren & Blan’s team of advisors in formulating, drafting and analysing the Anambra State Development & Investment Corporation (ADIC) Law, 2025, a landmark framework that is specifically designed to attract both foreign and local investments across the eastern State in Nigeria.
Ozioma’s dedication and excellence have earned her accolades, and among her string of awards and recognitions include the IFLR rankings/recognitions 4 years in a row in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 as a leading lawyer in banking & finance and project development, as well as recognition by the Legal 500 Directory. Ozioma was honoured in 2024 by the African Energy Chamber (AEC) as one of the 25 under 40 women energy stars. She is a recipient of the Nigeria’s ESQ 40 under 40 awards and more recently, was named one of Nigeria’s 25 Exceptional and Most Value-Adding Female Professionals, by the Guardian. She is recently nominated for Partner of the Year and Women Leaders in Law Awards by the African Legal Awards.
